Stackable and Modular Battery Systems

Many home batteries are modular, meaning you reach a target capacity by adding units or modules rather than buying one fixed-size box. This lets owners start small and grow, and it is now the dominant design across fixed and portable products.

A modular battery is one you scale by adding pieces. Instead of a single sealed capacity, these systems stack modules or units to reach the size a home needs. The approach lets you start with what you can afford and expand later, and it spans wall-mounted home batteries and portable power stations alike.

Module-based home systems

Some systems build capacity from small repeated modules. Generac's PWRcell uses individual 3.0 kWh battery modules and increases from 9 to 36 kWh on a single PWRcell inverter, so both storage and power rise as modules are added.

Others stack complete units. The Panasonic EverVolt 2.0 is modular and can be stacked for more storage, and the sonnenCore+ is stackable up to 3 systems for a maximum capacity of 60 kWh in the 20 kWh model.

Enphase takes the smallest building-block approach. The IQ Battery 5P is 5.0 kWh per module and is designed to be stacked, so installers add units to reach a target system size.

Modular portable and hybrid systems

Portable power stations are modular too. The BLUETTI EP900 is a modular Energy Storage System with a maximum capacity of 19.8 kWh, and the EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra is modular at 6,144 Wh per battery and stacks to reach far higher totals.

Expansion batteries are another modular pattern. The Goal Zero Yeti PRO 4000 supports up to 4 Tank Pro expansion batteries per unit through its expansion port, and the Anker SOLIX F3800 is expandable with add-on batteries for more runtime.

Across both fixed and portable categories, the common thread is growth after purchase rather than a one-time fixed capacity.

Why modular design won

Modularity matches storage to budget and need. Because capacity is added in steps, a homeowner can install a starter size and expand as loads or finances change, rather than over-buying at the start.

It also fits the range of backup goals. A partial critical-loads setup of roughly 10 kWh and a whole-home target of 30 kWh or more can be built from the same product line by changing the module count.

The pattern is now near universal. Generac, Panasonic, Enphase, sonnen, BLUETTI, EcoFlow, Goal Zero, and Anker all ship stackable or expandable designs, reflecting a market that has consolidated around modular storage.
