sonnenCore vs Tesla Powerwall 3: What the Datasheets Say

A side-by-side of documented specifications for the sonnen sonnenCore and the Tesla Powerwall 3, from each maker's own figures. No winner is declared; the two differ in capacity, power, and warranty wording on paper.

The sonnenCore and Tesla Powerwall 3 are two single-unit LFP home batteries built for backup and self-consumption. This comparison lists only published figures so the numbers read directly rather than through a ranking.

How to read this comparison

Every figure below comes from a named source: sonnen's EnergySage specification page and Tesla's datasheet. Capacity in kilowatt-hours sets runtime, and continuous power in kilowatts sets simultaneous load. Warranty is stated differently by each maker, so compare the exact wording.

Both use lithium iron phosphate chemistry in a single integrated unit.

No winner is declared. The right choice depends on target size, whether solar is added at the same time, and installer support.

sonnenCore, from sonnen's specs

EnergySage lists the sonnenCore at 10 kWh usable capacity with 4.8 kW continuous power and an 8.6 kW peak rating. It uses lithium iron phosphate chemistry.

The sonnenCore lists an 85% roundtrip efficiency and a warranty of 10 years and 10,000 cycles.

Tesla Powerwall 3, from Tesla's specs

Tesla rates the Powerwall 3 at 13.5 kWh of nominal battery energy with up to 11.5 kW AC continuous power. It integrates a solar inverter and supports up to 20 kW DC of solar.

Tesla lists 97.5% solar-to-grid efficiency and a 10-year warranty for the Powerwall 3.

Where they differ on paper

On single-unit capacity the Powerwall 3 lists 13.5 kWh versus the sonnenCore's 10 kWh. On continuous power the Powerwall 3 lists up to 11.5 kW versus the sonnenCore's 4.8 kW, though the sonnenCore lists an 8.6 kW peak.

Warranty is stated differently. sonnen lists 10 years and 10,000 cycles, while Tesla lists 10 years without a stated cycle count. Efficiency is also on different bases, 85% roundtrip for sonnen and 97.5% solar-to-grid for Tesla.

The Powerwall 3 integrates a solar inverter, while the sonnenCore comes in AC or DC configurations. Which fits depends on target size, solar integration, and installer support.
